If you have not had the opportunity to check out the cigar box guitars on display at the cafe, it is definitely worth a visit. The first time we saw these unique guitar and amp “sculptures” we thought they were so neat. Then the artist picked one up, plugged into the cigar box amp and starting playing. Much to our surprise, they’re not just works of art - these are bonafide electric guitars! This is a must-have for any musician with a serious collection and a great conversation piece to display anywhere. In addition to the electric guitars, one piece is an acoustic guitar made from an old metal olive oil can and other found objects. The tone made by the hollow metal is simply beautiful. Leiko Uchiyama: My Felting Journey
Lecture & Presentation by Japanese fiber artist, Leiko Uchiyama: My Felting Journey
Wednesday, April 17, 2013, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Samantha’s Cafe and Catering
$5 Suggested Donation
Leiko Uchiyama has developed an international following for the exquisite hand felted garments she creates in her signature “Matsuba” or “Pine needles” felt technique; inspired by pine needles spread on snow in her homeland of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.
Leiko’s fascinating journey has taken her around the globe in a circuitous path as sheep shearer, author, fiber artist and teacher. She writes “The process of creation is central to what I am. … As time passes, my felt creates the path I’ve been passing through.”
She has studied, taught and exhibited extensively throughout Asia, Europe, Australia, South America, the UK and the USA. Leiko currently resides in Carlow, Ireland. Leiko Uchiyama’s work can be seen at www. leikofelt.com

Step 1, The Meet and Greet
I take a trip to the farm and meet the sheep! I greet the sheep by name, looking for the prettiest color and the best spinning fleece.
Step 2, Washy, washy, washy
With fleece in hand, I head home to wash it, then hang it out to dry.
Step 3, Brushing and Combing and Carding, OH MY!
I have to brush out the hay seed and the grass. (And you thought combing your kid’s hair was bad?!) And then, card it to get the hairs aligned in one direction for spinning.
Step 4, Spin, Spin, Spin!
It takes approximately 10 hours to spin 8ozs of yarn. You take the yarn from the bobbin to the knitty knotty (two heads, one body.)
Step 5, Dying
Choose your color and heat the water and soak the yarn. You can do natural, kool aid, so many choices! Wash and let dry.
Step 6 Last prep til ya knit
Hang yarn on the umbrella swift and from there you spin it onto the ball winder. And now you’re ready for knitting!
To think, all that work for a hank of yarn!
