What’s in the bag?

Wondering what’s in this bag? Well, here are a few clues. It’s organic, farm direct, and fair-trade. The flavor and aroma might remind you of dark berry, vanilla, baking spice, tobacco, and hops.

You guessed it smarty-pants! It’s the very first shipment of a new socially conscious coffee to be featured at Samantha’s Café! This rich blend comes from the Gayo region of Sumatra (largest of the 17,500+ islands that make up the archipelago of Indonesia) and is roasted at the hip Caffé Vita in Seattle, recently named by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best places in the world to get coffee.

“Sumatra Gayo River” is the first of many new roasts that will be offered at the café in the future. We hope you enjoy this velvety smooth brew as much as we do. Be sure to tell us what you think!

Don’t know how to make soup? I bet you know how to EAT soup!
Buy a bowl of soup during April and help raise money for one of the eight featured organizations. In addition, Samantha’s will be donating 50% of all sales from their “house” soup to a charity that we have chosen (Yes, you guessed it. We picked Art in the Public Eye as our charity).

Happy New Year!

Did you stay up to watch the ball drop last night? Whether you decided to ring in the new year at home or traveled out of town to party it up, we hope you had a great night! Here at the cafe, we celebrated with bride-to-be, Amanda, and her guests. There was a bounty of yummy treats including chocolate raspberry layer cake, a variety of fresh quiche, pumpkin rolls, and our new favorite dessert - mini raspberry mascarpone tarts! After the bridal shower, Liz went home to be with her little ones and Jen headed up to Montreal to spend the night with hubby’s sister and their new baby nephew on his first ever New Year’s Eve.

Now that the holiday is over, we are focused on many exciting plans for 2012. The first big announcement is the new restaurant menu which will take effect in mid-January. You spoke up and we listened. Squash Apple Bisque, Mac ‘n Cheese, Crowing Chicken Salad and many other favorites will remain on the menu. Baked Tofu Wrap, Breakfast Sandwiches, vegan desserts, and many other items will be added! Other plans for the year include an expanded catering menu, regularly scheduled evening events at the cafe, and an improved outdoor dining area on the porch later this spring. We will be posting our progress on all of these new projects here on the blog and on Facebook. If you have suggestions that would help us improve your dining experience, we would love to hear from you anytime. Write to us at [email protected].

Wishing you and yours a very happy New Year!

I say lat-kuh, you say lat-kee!

We had a great time competing in the first ever Latke Fest at Temple Beth El this past weekend! Our recipe was a twist on the tradition with beets (in place of potato), mango salsa (in place of applesauce), & chive crème fraîche (in place of sour cream). The salsa and cream were both pretty delicious, if we do say so ourselves. You might just see one or both on the cafe menu at some point in the future! Check out some of the event photos on the Post Star website.

Welcome to the new Samantha’s

Thank you to Leif Alexander Bernard Photography and all other attendees who sent in their photos of our Grand Re-Opening. Check out the full photo album of the event here.

There were well over 100 people who gathered at the cafe to hear great music by Cabin 3 and try sample-size portions of old favorites and new recipes including Turkeyberry, Squash Apple Bisque, Moroccan Basmati, Hot Meatloaf, Baked Tofu, Apricot CousCous, Thai Noodles, and more.

Much to our surprise, the Baked Tofu was by far the most popular item of the night. Your continued feedback will help us develop the new menu which is scheduled to be released just after the holiday season. Some of the changes will include more vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options on the cafe menu and expanded offerings on our catering menu.
