Step 1, The Meet and Greet
I take a trip to the farm and meet the sheep! I greet the sheep by name, looking for the prettiest color and the best spinning fleece.
Step 2, Washy, washy, washy
With fleece in hand, I head home to wash it, then hang it out to dry.
Step 3, Brushing and Combing and Carding, OH MY!
I have to brush out the hay seed and the grass. (And you thought combing your kid’s hair was bad?!) And then, card it to get the hairs aligned in one direction for spinning.
Step 4, Spin, Spin, Spin!
It takes approximately 10 hours to spin 8ozs of yarn. You take the yarn from the bobbin to the knitty knotty (two heads, one body.)
Step 5, Dying
Choose your color and heat the water and soak the yarn. You can do natural, kool aid, so many choices! Wash and let dry.
Step 6 Last prep til ya knit
Hang yarn on the umbrella swift and from there you spin it onto the ball winder. And now you’re ready for knitting!
To think, all that work for a hank of yarn!
